Morning came. It brought with it aching muscles, hunger, and a distinct lack of a short, pink-haired satyr wrangling his cock. Oddly enough, Julian was rather disappointed about that latter, and he even contemplated summoning Cifa just so he could enjoy the comfort of his bed for another hour.

“Who are you kidding?” he grumbled at himself as he rose from his bed. “As small as she is? You’d probably finish within seconds, just like Odray teased you for.”

The memory did nothing for his confidence, but he shoved the thought aside and got dressed. He caught a whiff of his own musk along the way. It was so foul that he almost gagged, so he threw on his overcoat and went behind the house with a bucket. The houses on the block were arranged so that they could all share the same well, a fact that bothered him when the wind blew back his overcoat to reveal his shorts. Sadly, he wasn’t fortunate enough to afford his own well, even now that he was the town’s curator.

After a quick wash, he shoved some of his clothes into the bucket to freshen them up, hung them in the kitchen to dry, and headed to Azgarthe. Today was his last day to have the grounds to himself, so he quickened his pace to make full use of every available minute.

The conversation with Odray stirred too many troubles of the past, troubles that had nothing to do with her remarks about his stamina. It was her other statements, those that revolved around his inability to remain with her after that long summer. He meant what he said about not being able to offer her everything she deserved, and he didn’t just mean wealth. He was emotionally poor. His heart and mind had been left in a perpetual state of numbness ever since his parents were killed. Whatever love he had within him was too frail to endure the hardships of marriage, even with someone as understanding as Odray Keirson.

“Perhaps I’ve changed enough though?” he whispered as he hurried down the secret stairwell. “Maybe I’ve grown enough to…”

He intended to finish the sentence once the door was open, but a chorus of shouts made him forget all about his failed love life. Cifa was on one knee beside the plants that seemed to have doubled since he last saw them, clutching her head with one hand while using her other to keep from falling chest-first onto the grass.

“Do it now! Paralyze her!”

“Paralyze who?” he shouted and charged into the Undervale, fearing that they were under attack. He found Mekiko hiding behind the well, along with a familiar, striking figure in a torn dress. It was the woman Aura sought to sacrifice to the demon Tallos, and her lovely face was riddled with fear when she looked up at him.

“Not her,” the kitsune growled and reached up to jerk him to the ground. “Her!”

She released his hand to point at the gateway on the edge of the shadows, the one she said led to the mountains in the north.
